Spitzenwaren [Lace Goods] (2021-)
Spitzenwaren is a series of 38 graphite drawings that deals intensively with the patterns and documents of a Stuttgart lace goods company in the first half of the 20th century and thus parallels the history of the aesthetic development of ornaments as well as the economic development from the turn of the century to the years of reconstruction and translates it into a contemporary form.
The single drawing of the series takes patterns and documents as a repeat and transposes them several times mirrored into an all-over, framed by a medallion form.
The starting point were the original pattern templates of the handmade lace goods, which, applied to thin tracing paper with ink, served as a template for the mostly female manual workers. In addition, the artist researched company correspondence, court records, tax and financial documents, and advertising materials in numerous archives throughout Germany, which illustrate the development of the company. Patterns as well as documents become the subject of an artistic work here for the first time.
The fascinating variety of past patterns is transferred into a present form by the pencil drawing, tracing the elaborate steps of the manual laborers. In the process, a history of style and production emerges in condensed form, ranging from World War I, the Great Depression, and the Nazi dictatorship to the postwar period. Thus the filled-in oval of the drawing becomes a fragile time capsule.
